🏢Understanding Sick Building Syndrome: Prevalence and Risk Factors 🏢Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) refers to a set of symptoms experienced by people who spend time in poorly decorated, badly lit, and inadequately ventilated environments. These symptoms include mucosal irritation, allergy-like reactions, and psychological impairment. 🔍Prevalence:- A recent study found that pre-SBS is prevalent among young adults (aged 20–29 years) of both sexes [1].- Common symptoms include condensation, fatigue, poor work output and musty odours in the office space.- Skin symptoms, such as eczema and itching, are associated with physical labour and technical work [2].🌿Risk Factors:- Factors linked to SBS include the excessive use of deodorants and fragrances.- Efficient ventilation plans and air conditioning systems are crucial to prevent mould, spores and condensation.- A drab and lifeless office space with little decoration or natural lighting.🛠 The Fix:- Regular cleaning, fresh and lively décor, and effective ventilation are essential for maintaining a healthy environment.- Consider your personal stress levels, as anxiety exacerbates SBS.- Take regular screen breaks if you work on a computer, and go outside on your lunch break if you are able - even just for 5 minutes.Remember, a healthier workplace benefits everyone!🌟#SickBuildingSyndrome #IndoorHealth #WorkplaceWellness1: Nakayama, Y., Nakaoka, H., Suzuki, N., Tsumura, K., Hanazato, M., Todaka, E., & Mori, C. Ensuring the wellbeing of our fellow colleagues & employees isn't just an added bonus - it's *essential* for fostering psychological safety at work. When we prioritise the mental and emotional health of our colleagues and peers, we create an environment where everyone feels valued, supported, and empowered to bring their best selves to work each day 🙋🏻♀️ .Psychological safety means employees feel comfortable expressing their ideas, taking risks, and admitting their mistakes without fear of judgment, anger or repercussions. It really is a solid foundation for innovation, collaboration, and overall job satisfaction within the office.Investing in wellbeing initiatives - whether through mental health resources, HR, flexible working conditions, or simply fostering an open, communicative workplace culture pays dividends in the form of a happier, collaborative, more productive workforce 🙌🏻 .🌟 #EmployeeWellbeing #PsychologicalSafety #WorkplaceCulture #MentalHealthAtWork

🧠 🌟 Embracing Neurodiversity in the Workplace 🌟 🧠 As a woman with ADHD, I've navigated my career with a unique set of strengths and challenges. While ADHD presents its obstacles, it's also shaped me into a resilient, creative, and resourceful professional.Throughout my journey, I've learned to harness my hyper-focus to dive deep into projects, often bringing fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to the table. My ability to think outside the box has proven invaluable in problem-solving and driving projects forward. However, it's not always smooth sailing. ADHD comes with its share of struggles, from time management to maintaining focus in meetings. BUT... with the right support systems and accommodations, I've found ways to mitigate these challenges and thrive in my career. One of the most important lessons I've learned is the power of ✨ self-advocacy. ✨ By openly discussing my ADHD and advocating for the accommodations I need, I've fostered a more inclusive and supportive work environment for myself and others. To employers and colleagues; I urge you to embrace neurodiversity in the workplace. Recognise that diversity extends beyond race, gender, and ethnicity—it also encompasses neurodivergent individuals like myself who bring unique perspectives and talents to the table.By fostering an environment of understanding, flexibility, and empathy, we can create workplaces where individuals of all backgrounds and neurotypes can excel and thrive.#Neurodiversity #ADHD #Inclusion #DiversityandInclusion #WorkplaceCulture

Since Autumn 2023 ADHD-ers across the UK have been dealing with a critical medication shortage. Many of us have worried how this will affect us in our workplace. For me, this means:😵 Increased Distractibility😵 Poor Memory Function😵 Struggling with workplace Interpersonal Skills😵 Hyperactive PresentationI am lucky enough to be in an incredibly supportive workplace with very understanding senior management, who are supporting me through this unprecedented time! But how do I tackle these issues myself?😎 Being Distracted: I listen to classical music/music without words or other sounds to drown out office noises.😎 Memory: I write checklists for complex & long tasks. I also write notes on post-it's and put them in a highly visible place.😎 Interpersonal Skills: I regularly ask others for feedback, and over time I have learnt to pick up on social cues more readily.😎 Hyperactivity: I take intermittent 'breaks' to do photocopying, go to do the mail, or walk to the kitchen to get a glass of water. It's been a personal uphill battle to find a workplace with supportive management & where I am comfortable in managing the challenges surrounding my ADHD. It's taken time to find what works for me, but now I know - I feel so much happier in the office, as well as my working life!
