Natural Dog Deodorizer Spray DIY Recipe Guide (2024)

This simple dog deodorizer spray DIY recipe is going to change how you think about pet odors. It’s great to use whether you have a stinky dog, musty smells, or dog bedding that needs freshening in between washes. This spray works for all of it!

Where to use Dog Deodorizer Spray

The good news is that you can use this spray for all the stinky dog odors. Whether it’s your dog’s fur or the dog’s bed, this DIY spray should be able to take care of it. Personally, I love that it’s free of toxic ingredients and provides a natural solution to those pesky pet odors.

This spray is what I use when my dog’s coat smells from a long day outside, rolling around on something, or just has that wet dog smell. It’s a great way to get rid of that strong smell when you can’t or aren’t able to give your furry friend a bath.

The deodorizing spray also works great on all the dog stuff, especially those highly used items like dog beds, blankets, and other soft furnishings like couches, chairs, or even carpets.

Natural Ingredients

Water

The best option is to use distilled water since all impurities are removed through a distillation process. If you’re going to use distilled water, then I would suggest you buy this from the store. The next best option is to use boiled tap water that has been cooled, which is what I use the majority of the time. Boiling the water removes microorganisms, but it still has mineral salts.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is known for absorbing odors and removing musty smells. It’s also gentle enough to use on your canine companion as well as their bedding and blankets.

Alcohol

Clear, high-proof alcohol is ideal for this recipe. It is colorless, doesn’t have a strong scent, and works well to mix essential oils and water for a longer period of time. I would recommend using Vodka or Everclear when making your own odor spray. This is needed for actually emulsifying the ingredients.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are what give this homemade dog spray its gorgeous scent. Using essential oils is a great choice when looking to add scent to a recipe while avoiding artificial scents. In this recipe, we are using organic essential oil blends that will help neutralize and get rid of unpleasant odors.

Essential Oils and Blends for DIY Dog Spray

There are several essential oils that you can use that are dog friendly. Essential oils you can use in this DIY recipe are lavender, lemon, orange, lemongrass, rosemary, frankincense, myrrh, or chamomile are known to be safe for dogs. If using the spray on pet items and not directly on your dog, then you can also use purification or thieves essential oils in addition to the others.

Let’s jump right intomaking a homemade dog spray recipe! This recipe is for a 2 oz.glass spray bottle, but you can double the recipe for a 4 oz.glass spray bottletoo.

Before you get started, if you will use boiled water as I do, you will want to boil it right away. You can boil it in a glass measuring cup in the microwave or boil the water on your stovetop. I typically will boil 2-4 ounces of water at a time, just in case something happens or I want to make another recipe!

Add 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda to 1 1/2 oz. of warm water (either boiled and cooled or distilled water slightly heated). Mix the baking soda until dissolved.

Measure out 1/2 ounce of clear alcohol (vodka) and pour it into the glass spray bottle using a small funnel if needed.

Lastly, add in your drops ofessential oilto give your dog spray a natural scent. For the 2oz size bottle, add between 12-15 drops of essential oils. For the 4oz size bottle, I would suggest between 20-30 drops of essential oils. You can start with a smaller amount of essential oils and add more if needed. See the essential oil list above for recommendations to use and blends.

I like using purification essential oil in this recipe, but only on pet bedding or as a room spray since I don’t recommend using peppermint oil on dogs. If using the deodorizer spray on my pet, then I like using lemon, orange, and lavender essential oils.

Once all of the ingredients are added, you can screw on the spray nozzle and shake to mix. Each time you use the dog deodorizing spray, you will want to shake it before using it to ensure the ingredients are mixed well.

How to use Dog Deodorizer Spray

One of the main reasons I love using this recipe is that you can use it in so many ways including on your pet, their bedding, your furniture, or simply as an air freshener.

To use your dog’s deodorizer spray, you will want to spray it directly to the pet’s coat making sure to avoid their eyes, mouth, and any sensitive areas. I like giving my dog a treat while giving her a quick spray down her back. Although this is free of harsh chemicals, you may want to test a small area to make sure there isn’t any skin irritation on your pet.

When using it on your dog’s bed, blankets, or spot on the couch you can spray any spot that needs freshening up. You can gently massage the spray into the item, or let it air dry. If needed, reapply until the stinky smell is gone.

Lastly, you can simply use this recipe as an air freshener. It’s great for those areas where our pet tends to hang out often and may have a strong smell of dog. A few sprays into the air will purify and clear the odors! You can use it daily or as needed.

How long will my Natural Dog Deodorizer Spray last?

While this recipe may not last that long, it has a shelf life of around 3 months or so. The main reason for that is that there aren’t any preservatives in this recipe. Using distilled or boiled water will help your room spray last longer than if you used regular tap water.
