The Gamecube Nintendo version was released in North America on March 28, 2006. The Wii version was never released in North America.

The game begins with you choosing your birth date and gender. The female character is a girl wearing a pink shirt, blue pants, and brown pigtails. The male character has brown hair in a blue ballcap and blue overalls. After that you will meet the mayor, Theodore, who will let you pick your land. There is the town property, which has little space but is nearby to all the shops, the fertile riverside property, that is good for fishing and has a little space for barns and chicken coops, and the oceanside property, farthest away from the village and least fertile, but is by far the largest, and nearby to the beach, where all the summer festivals are held, and you can pick up coral there for 35g a piece. After choosing your property you will name it, and you'll also get to name your character. In this article your character will be named "Sam", but you can name it whatever you want. Ellen from Blue Sky Ranch will give you a dog, which you must name too. Blue Sky Ranch is where you can by sheep, chickens, cows, miracle potions, and supplies. At Spring farm you can by seeds to plant vegetables and flowers. After shipping some limestone they will also sell fertilizer. There are different seeds for different seasons, except no seeds for winter. You will soon meet the Harvest Goddess, who has been turned to stone. The Harvest sprites want you to save her, and to do that you will have to complete tasks that will give you music notes. Every five notes you may return to the spring and they will turn into an instrument. You will meet Jamie there, and if Sam is a girl, Jamie will be a boy. If Sam is a boy, Jamie will be a girl. Jamie will be your rival for the game.

Like most Harvest Moon games, you have a chance to get married. Getting married has many requirements. You need to have at least 30 musical notes, an level 3 home, the blue feather, a double bed, and at least 8 hearts with your bride/groom to be. Here are the possible marriage choices for males and females:

You may also marry Jamie, as s/he will always be the opposite gender of Sam. But, if you marry him/her, your game will end, so it may not be the best choice. Some of these characters will not be there at the start of the game, such as Lyla won't move in until her store, Hearty Lyla opens, which won't happen until you ship a lot of flowers, or Gina won't appear until you befriend Alex.

Townsfolk

These people aren't available for marriage, but you can still befriend and interact with them. For example, if you befriend Martha she will expand your rucksack. Some townspeople also own stores, or are the parents of the bachelors and bachelorettes.

If you have the hammer in your rucksack you can enter either Moonlight Cave or Lake Cave and get gems or ore. In Moonlight Cave common finds are junk ore, bronze ore, silver ore, gold ore, rare ore, and moonstone. You have to go down pretty deep to get to the gemstones. In winter the lake freezes over and you can access Lake Cave. Lake cave has a lot more gems, including topaz, aquamarine, sapphire, amethyst, emerald, ruby, and diamonds, but it can only be accessed in the Winter, replacing growing crops in that season.

Fishing is a great thing to do on a rainy day when your crops don't need to be watered, your animals are fed, you can't go ride your horse and you don't feel like going to the mines. Ray is the local fisherman, and you can find him fishing wherever there's water. He can give you a copper fishing rod when you think your ready. If you want to be a great fisherman, befriend the dolphin. After it has a couple hearts with you he'll take you to the Island whenever you ask. The island has great fishing, with some kinds of fish that can't be caught anywhere else. After fishing, instead of just putting it in the shipping bin, you can cook it first, and eat it to recover stamina, or ship the cooked version, and you can usually make more money.

There are 100 musical notes to collect. After collecting 50 the goddess will be freed, but you can keep playing to try and collect them all. Before you even leave the goddess' spring you will receive your first note, the "First Step Note". Many accomplishments are rewarded with notes, like going to festivals, visiting new places, and befriending people. All the bachelors and balchelorettes will give you a gift after you reach a certain level of friendship with them. You will receive a note for each gift you receive. Some notes can be received by doing wacky things, like the Whack a mole note. The Whack a mole note is gained after hitting the mole with your hammer a certain number of times. Other notes are given by doing good things, like the first time you put out a bonfire with your watering can.

In the game you have many tools. You start of with the watering can, the hoe, the sickle, the pedometer, and some other useful things. Other tools you'll need to purchase later on, like the brush. All tools that have the word Iron at the beginning can be upgraded, either at the blacksmith after he moves in, or by buying it at the junk shop. There is a little bar in the information about the tool that will tell you when it is ready to be upgraded. The levels are: Iron, copper, silver, gold, goddess.
