In pictures: Gazan families struggle to access water

These images, taken over the past few days, show the struggle faced by Gazan families to get access to drinkable water.

Many of the territory's water wells and pipelines have been destroyed by the war, meaning children are having to make long treks to fetch enough to sustain their families.

"Children are losing their childhood because of this war. This needs to stop now," UNRWA said in a report.

Israel and Hamas on UN blacklist for violence against children

Israel and Hamas have been included for the first time on a United Nations list for violating children's rights.

The UN's Children in Armed Conflict office said in its annual report that war in Israel and Gaza, as well as in Ukraine and Sudan, led to an unprecedented number of children being killed and injured in 2023.

They said there was a "shocking 21% increase in grave violations" last year against those under the age of 18 across all conflicts, while Israel and Hamas' war has had a 155% increase alone.

UN secretary-seneral Antonio Guterres said in the report thatIsraeliforces were included for the first time over the IDF killing and maiming of children and attacking schools and hospitals.

Hamas, along with Palestinian Islamic Jihad militants, were also included for killing, injuring and abducting children.

In total, the UN report said, "some 19,887 Palestinian children were reported killed or maimed" across the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. They add "the reports are pending verification".

Israel's UN envoy Gilad Erdan said last week he had been notified Israel's military had been added to the list, and said he was "shocked and disgusted by this shameful decision".

Sirens still sounding in northern Israel

While the Israel Defence Forces has confirmed it is responding to Hezbollah's rocket attack (see previous post), air attack sirens continue to sound in northern Israel.

An aircraft infiltration alert has been issued in 10 areas - presumably for drones - while rocket sirens continue to blare across several sectors.

The first rocket alert was issued just before 7am this morning UK time (9am in Israel).

More than 160 rockets have already been fired so far today by Hezbollah, with no casualties reported.

IDF strikes targets in Lebanon in response to massive rocket barrage

The Israel Defence Forces has responded to Hezbollah's massive rocket barrage this morning by striking targets in southern Lebanon.

"Fighter jets attacked four terrorist infrastructures of the Hezbollah terrorist organization in the Ya'atar area in southern Lebanon, from where launches were made towards the north of the country earlier today," an IDF statement read.

The Hanine region was also targeted.

Hezbollah fired some 160 rockets at parts of northern Israel in retaliation for last night's killing of Taleb Abdullah in a presumed Israeli airstrike.

The IDF also confirmed that no casualties had been sustained in the rocket barrages this morning.

Another ship attacked in Red Sea

A merchant vessel has been attacked in the Red Sea, in what appears to be the latest Houthi attack in the area.

The ship was hit about 66nm southwest of the rebel-held port city of Hodeida, UKMTO said.

Maritime security firm Ambrey "assessed the vessel aligned with the Houthi target profile at the time of the incident".

The Houthis are part of an Iran-aligned regional alliance, which also includes Hamas and Lebanon's Hezbollah.

The Houthis say they are targeting any and all ships they believe are linked, operated, owned, flagged or travelling to or from Israel.

US and British destroyers are among an international naval taskforce set up to combat the Houthi attacks in the area.

In pictures: IDF on operations in Rafah

The Israel Defence Forces continues to operate in the southern Gazan city of Rafah.

In its latest military update, the IDF said servicemen and women of the 162nd Division, Givanti Brigade and Nahal Brigade had "face-to-face" encounters with fighters in the city.

Israel has been much criticised for entering the city despite massive international pressure not to.

Sirens continue to sound in northern Israel

It does not appear as though Hezbollah's rocket attack on northern Israel is over.

Sirens continue to blare in areas including Zar'it - which is just a few kilometres from the border with Lebanon.

Some 160 rockets have been fired already this morning according to the IDF, with Hezbollah saying it's retaliating for the death of Taleb Abdullah in a presumed Israeli airstrike last night.

This morning's barrage already stands as one of the largest Hezbollah attacks since the start of hostilities in October last year.

Hezbollah claims responsibility for massive rocket barrages after commander death

The Lebanon-based Hezbollah group has claimed responsibility for the massive rocket barrages fired at northern Israel this morning.

The group said it targeted several Israeli military sites, including the Meron air traffic control base, the Amiad camp and an armoured vehicle factory.

Hezbollah said the strikes are in retaliation for the death of senior commander Taleb Abdullah in a presumed Israeli airstrike last night.

The strike on Lebanon's Jouaiyya killed Abdullah and three other Hezbollah members.

Abdullah is considered to be one of the most senior Hezbollah officers killed since the most recent outbreak of hostilities in October last year.

The IDF says more than 160 rockets have been fired already this morning.

Further 70 rockets fired in second barrage from Lebanon

A second barrage of rockets has been fired into northern Israel from Lebanon, with further sirens sounding.

This second barrage contains as many as 70 missiles, according to the Israeli military.

Around 90 rockets had been fired in a first barrage this morning, according to the Israel Defence Forces.

No injuries or deaths in either wave have been reported.

Some 150 rockets have already been fired in total, according to the IDF, with reports suggesting that sirens are still sounding.
