If there’s something that never goes out of fashion it's email, but with the advance of technology, it's no longer enough to simply send and receive emails. We also need ways to filter our overflowing inbox, a calendar for our busy schedules, a handy task manager, and other productive tools to save us precious time. Moreover, privacy and security have become a considerable concern to internet users lately, which means that email clients need to step up their game and start offering encryption tools so that the only people reading your messages are you and the recipient. eM Client knows this and, since 2007, has been upgrading its services to answer its users' needs. Making eM Client an excellent product that not only will increase your productivity but secure your emails too. Best of all, it does it all free of charge.

Features

eM Client is more than just an email client. With all the features it provides, you’ll be able to manage all your personal and professional tasks, direct message your friends, and more. When it comes to email management, there’s not much more you could ask for. Not only does eM Client give you an unlimited amount of email accounts associated with the application, but it also provides you with some neat features to make sure you don't lose yourself under a pile of emails such as a smart filter, thorough email rules, and folders to store your emails.

More than that, eM Client also helps save time while writing emails. It also offers a spellchecker to make sure you don't send that important email with any glaring errors. Users can also create email templates, so you don’t need to write the same thing over and over again, as well as offering signature creation. On top of that, eM Client throws an email scheduler into the mix to make sure your emails are sent at the right time.

However, eM Client shines the most when it comes to organization and productivity. eM Client comes with a taskbar where you can create your to-do list which you’re able to customize by adding the level of importance and due date. There’s also an integrated chat that lets you speak with anyone from Google Talk, Jabber or any other XMPP-based server. Nevertheless, there is a time where we need to concentrate on the task at hand and, fortunately, eM Client lets you snooze your inbox anytime you want.

Privacy & Security

Having essentially three apps in one is great, but we also need to take into account the amount of privacy and security an email client provides. When it comes to security, eM Client filters spam and comes with anti-phishing protection. Moreover, it will only show images from an email when you give permission or whitelist the sender.

Still, the problem doesn’t end just by making sure you’re not clicking on dodgy links that will steal your information. Email, at its core, isn’t safe. From when it leaves your account to when it arrives at its destination, your messages travel through various servers and most of the time, your data isn’t even encrypted. This means that a hacker who intercepts the communication will be able to read everything. Companies too, such as ISPs and email providers, are also able to store your data along the way. To solve this, you need to add encryption to your emails. eM Client uses TLS/SSL by default, protecting you from man-in-the-middle attacks, but that's still not enough since the email provider will still be able to read your email. Fortunately, eM Client goes even further and also lets you configure S/MIME and PGP end-to-end encryption certificates in an easy way.

Platforms

eM Client is only available for desktop, meaning that you’ll need to use another email client on your mobile, which isn’t ideal. Nevertheless, due to the number of features and simple interface, you may still want to use it on your Windows or Mac.

Overall, the eM Client interface is clean and straightforward, perfect for both the tech-savvy and for novices. On the left, you’ll find a sidebar where you can scroll between mail, calendar, tasks, and contacts tab. It has an excellent organization throughout the four tabs: everything is straightforward and won’t take much time to understand how it works. This is surprising when we take into account the amount of customization the email client provides. On the other side of the screen, you’ll find another sidebar showing the history of messages, attachments, tasks, and appointments of your selected contact. Although they are disabled by default, you can also add a tab for invitations and live chat.

Due to this organization, everything you need is just a few clicks away without flooding you with a massive amount of information. Though certain features that you may only use occasionally are more hidden and can only be accessed through the menu on the top side of the program's window.

Pricing

eM Client offers both a free and a paid plan and although the free plan comes with all the features discussed so far, there are some perks for going pro. First of all, you need to upgrade your plan to use eM Client commercially. More importantly, you’ll be able to have unlimited accounts associated with your license; the free license only gives you two accounts. On top of that, you’ll get premium customer support, unrestricted translation of incoming emails, and access to the license manager as well.

There’s a pro license available through the lifetime subscription that costs $49.95 but you can only use it on one computer. However, you will have to pay if you want future versions, unless you also get the lifetime upgrades, which increases the price to $99.95. Nevertheless, the more licenses you buy, the less each unit costs. For example, ten licenses with lifetime upgrades cost $411.95, which is, roughly, $41.20 per device — a 50% discount per unit.

There’s a decent variety of payment methods available, such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, wire transfer, and PayPal.

Customer Service

The customer service experience depends on if you are a free or a pro user. Nevertheless, eM Client offers various channels to find answers to your queries, even as a free user. The FAQ section is always an excellent place to start when facing an issue. Although it lacks a search bar to help us find our questions faster, it is still very well organized and covers a vast array of subjects. If the FAQs are not enough, the next step is to visit eM Client's community forum, where we were able to find everything we needed, but there is always the option to send a query and wait just a couple of hours to get an answer.

For the times you really need to speak with the customer service, you have the option of Twitter where the company answers users' tweets, Facebook where you can contact through messenger, or through the good, old email. We tried the latter, and we got our thorough and polite reply within 24 hours.

As a pro user, besides the above channels, you also have access to the enterprise online support center that not only ensures quick responses but offers remote assistance from eM Client's support engineers as well.

Bottom Line

Although eM Client comes with some limitations, like not having a mobile app or a license working only with one device, it's a well-rounded email client. It not only offers impressive email management features, but it also lets you organize your task list and calendar. On top of that, it provides the possibility to easily configure S/MIME and PGP certificates, which is great if you worry about email security. It's even more surprising when you take into account that you can get all of this for free. Although the free plan only lets you have two accounts, but, for personal use, we believe that's enough. In short, eM Client is definitely worth checking out.
